چکیده

Traditional methods of evaluating transmission expansions focus on the social impact of the investments based on the current generation stock which may include firm generation expansion plans. In this paper, we evaluate the social welfare implications of transmission investments based on equilibriummodels characterizing the competitive interaction among generation firms whose decisions in generation capacity investments and production are affected by both the transmission investments and the congestion management protocols of the transmission system operator. Our analysis shows that both the magnitude of the welfare gains associated with transmission investments and the location of the best transmission expansions may change when the generation expansion response is taken into consideration. We illustrate our results using a 30-bus network example. An incorrect version of this article was published online. The correct version is given here. This paper examines the incentives that generation firms have in restructured electricity markets for supporting long-term transmission investments. In particular, we study whether generation firms, which arguably play a dominant role in the restructured electricity markets, have the incentives to fund or support incremental social-welfare-improving transmission investments. We examine this que...

Generation Investment and Capacity Adequacy in Electricity Markets

One of the major challenges in restructured power systems is to maintain a level of generation capacity that ensures an acceptable level of certainty against power interruptions. A power market with a wellfunctioning spot market and long-term markets for allocation of risks between consumers and producers should in theory generate optimal investments in new power generation capacity, but this m...

Congestion Management in Electricity Markets Using Demand Response Programs and Series FACTS Devices

In today’s restructured environment, congestion management plays an essential role in power system operation. Different methods are presented and discussed in this respect for congestion management in short-term and long-term intervals. It is attempted in the present paper to investigate the impact mechanism of FACTS devices and demand response programs together with generation re-dispatch as s...
